The Vietnam Counteroffensive was a tactical campaign used by the United States armed forces during the Vietnam War. This counteroffensive occurred in seven phases from 1965 to 1971. Lichte would have served in the second phase of this Counteroffensive. The goal of the counteroffensive’s second phase was to retaliate against the North Vietnamese support of the South Vietnamese insurgency, to continue the pushback of North Vietnamese and Vietcong forces in South Vietnam, and to help the South Vietnamese regain control of their territory. To this end, American air raids were performed on strategic targets and enemy forces. American ground troops fought a war of attrition against North Vietnamese forces, using body count as a metric of progress in war. Lichte would have flown med-evac helicopters for these ground forces, providing an invaluable service in saving the lives of soldiers on the ground.
